Future Space
At one time, astronomers believed the surface of Mars was crisscrossed by canal systems. This, in turn, fueled speculation that Mars, like Earth, was capable of supporting life and housing a native civilization. However, as human satellites and rovers began to undertake flybys and studies of the planet, this view of Mars faded, and was replaced with one in which the Red Planet was a cold, parched, and lifeless environment.
