Decade to decade, season to season, and even day to day, Earth’s rotation speeds up and slows down, shaving off or adding milliseconds to our 24-hour count every day. On 29 June, the Earth recorded its shortest day since the adoption of the atomic clock standard in 1970. It was recorded at 1.59 milliseconds in less than 24 hours.
